The Country’s Best Pre-Entrep School

Monday, May 14th, 2007

As the country struggles to address the unemployment issue, certain sectors of society have been espousing the refocusing of resources to promoting Entrepreneurship. They believe that this is the key to solving the state of joblessness.

Why worry about getting a job when you can be the boss and create jobs for others. “Kumita ka na, nakatulong ka pa!” would be a typical battle cry. This is reminiscent of the age old adage of “trying to teach someone how to fish instead of just giving him fishes since this would feed him for a lifetime.”

Several institutions have tried to ride the bandwagon either for their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, for profit, or both. Such entrepreneurial programs/school that have spawn-up in the recent years include AIM’s Master in Entrepreneurship, UA&P’s Entrepreneurial Management Program, and Vivienne Tan’s Entrepreneurs School of Asia (successor of Thames International Business School) to name a few.

Jeff Siy Steps Down as AAXS President,
Leaves for Canada

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Last 31st of March 2007, the AAXS’ 21st President, Mr. Jeffrey Siy of Batch ’80, quietly stepped down from his throne at the stroke of midnight. By April Fool’s next day, Jeff was very relaxed and in high spirits as his life would finally normalize after experiencing the most hectic 2 years of his life not long ago.

Compared to the past administrations, Jeff’s management team would be scrutinized and in the spotlight more often than usual due to his term being concurrent with the school Golden Jubilee Celebration. Fund-raising activities, personal appearances in events and long meetings would often overwhelm his filofax early in the morning to late nights; even lunch would not be spared. A short visit to the funeral homes in Araneta Avenue to extend the association’s condolences, or a quick remark in a little gathering would just be in the days work for this father of three.

Jeff’s topsy-turvy life actually started as early as the late 90s during Ruben Tan (’73) term where he got his first taste of EXCOM life as VP for Operations. From then on, Jeff would serve 3 more Presidents before latching on to the top plum last 16 March 2007. That fateful night, Jeff’s life changed forever.

Kamikaze Kid Powers AAXS to 22 and Under Diadem

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Randolph Chua (’04) once again willed Xavier School to victory by hitting two pressure-packed trifectas down the stretch to complete a blistering comeback and win the 10th Chiang San Ching Memorial Cup (22 and under), 72-64, over St. Stephen last Sunday (6 May 2007).

The fleet-footed Chua banged in a team high of 20 points while league MVP Justin Francis Qua (’04) backstopped him with 16 point aside from crucial rebounds and matching defensive stops down the stretch. UAAP standouts Chris Tiu (’03) and Woody Co (’06) chipped in 11 points apiece for the Stallions.

Chua’s flamboyant moves and daredevil attitude has that evoke comparisons to PBA’s Mark “The Spark” Caguioa and being christened as the “Kamikaze Kid” in the Xavier Alumni Basketball Leagues (XABL). Qua on the other hand proved to be a steady inside presence for team through out the tournament.
